It’s hard to believe, but in just a few months your summer garden will be only a memory. That’s why it’s time to start making plans for your 2014 fall garden, if you haven’t done so already.

A fall garden is a great way to keep feeding your family fresh homegrown produce long after summer has faded. In fact, the fall crops are some of my most favorite crops of all. They are delicious and nutritious. Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, peas, carrots, lettuce, and spinach are all grown in my fall garden each year.  Some of these crops will produce even into winter under the right conditions.

When should I start my fall seeds?

First, find out your area’s average first fall frost date. Then, you will want to count approximately 12-14 weeks back from that frost date to get the right time to start your fall seeds indoors for things like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and so on.

Mark the seed starting date on the calendar. Next, pick out what you want to grow, and order your seeds ASAP. For many of us, the time to start fall seeds is just right around the corner, so don’t delay.

It’s important to note that fall crops – both seeds and transplants –  aren’t as readily available in gardening centers like spring and summer crops. The fall gardening trend is catching on, but if you want a wide variety of heirloom seed to choose from, your best bet is to order online before selections run out.

How late is too late?

The end of July to the first part of August is the approximate deadline for starting seeds in the colder climates, Zones 6 and lower. This is especially important if you want to plant cabbage crops. So, if that’s where you live and grow, you’ll want to get started ASAP and order those seeds! Very early August will work too, but you need to have everything ready to go by then.

For Zones 7 and up, August is the perfect seed starting time.

Some seeds can be directly sown outdoors without need for starting indoors. Faster growing fall crops like broccoli, kale, and kohlrabi are some that you can direct-sow in many climates.
