Besweet Soybean History
Besweet Soybean (Glycine max) One of the best tasting and highest yielding edible soybeans for northern home and market gardeners. Upright, 2′ tall plants bear an early crop of bright green beans for edamame, fresh shelling, or drying. Plants produce at least 30 pods per plant with 2-3 beans per pod. Beans make a highly nutritious snack. 85 days.
Growing Besweet Bean
sow bean seeds 1 inch deep and 2 inches apart in rows 18 inches apart. Plant a little deeper in sandy soils (but not too deep). For pole beans, set up trellises or tepees prior to planting so that the plants’ fragile roots are not disturbed. Plant pole bean seeds about 1 inch deep and 3 inches apart.
Plant around a tepee: Tie 3 to 4 (or more) 7-foot-long bamboo poles or long, straight branches together at the top and splay the legs in a circle. Then plant 3 or 4 seeds around each pole. As vines appear, train them to wind up the poles. For more stability, wrap string/wire around the poles about halfway up, encircling the tepee; this gives the vines something to grab. For a harvest that lasts all summer, sow bean seeds every 2 weeks. If you’re going to be away and unable to harvest, skip a planting. Beans do not wait for anyone! Practice crop rotation to avoid the build up of pests and diseases.
Preserving And Storing Besweet Soybean
Select young, tender pods when the seed has just formed. Wash in cold water, cut into uniform 2- to 4-inch lengths or cut lengthwise into strips for French-style beans. Blanch beans in boiling water for 3 minutes. Cool quickly, drain and package. If a rigid container is used, leave 1/2–inch headspace. Seal package, label and freeze. Freeze no more than 1 quart (2 to 3 pounds) of food per cubic foot of freezer space per day. One cubic foot will hold 30 quarts of food.
