. One taste and you’ll be enchanted by its superb flavor. This Amish strain has been grown in Pennsylvania since the 1880’s.
History Of The Brandywine Tomato [Sudduth strain]
Brandywine is a tomato that entered into the Seed Savers Exchange, first in 1982. At that time, Ben Quisenberry received the variety from a woman named Dorris Sudduth Hill. She stated they had been in her family for over 80 years. These large, fleshy fruits are not usually available in supermarkets. While this fact makes it hard to enjoy them, the best option is to savor these delicious fruits whenever you get the chance. This tomato has the beefsteak shape along with mixed red and deep purple flesh.
Growing Brandywine Tomato Seeds
If you’re using your own seeds, plant them 1/4 inch deep and 1 inch apart in flats placed in a warm, sunny room. Once the seedlings grow their second set of leaves (the first true leaves), transplant them to plastic cups, burying the stems deeper than before. This encourages a strong root system. If you’re buying transplants from a nursery, you’ll also want to let them develop a solid root system before planting.
Cooking With Brandywine Red Tomato
This sweet tomato has a pinkish flesh, and a wonderful acidity. This variety is great for salads. Whether you cook them seared or grilled, the recipes you can make from these tomatoes are amazing. You can eat them raw or even make a delicious pasta sauce. You will never go wrong when using heirloom tomatoes.
How To Store Brandywine Heirloom Tomatoes
Brandywine is a favorite table tomato. The refrigerator isn’t the best place for Brandywine Tomatoes, however, as they are sensitive to cold. Refrigeration also slows the ripening process.
