Calima Bean History

(Phaseolus vulgaris) Early long-podded green bean from France. Vigorous upright growth habit. Almost impossible to find outside of Europe, we have secured a solid supply of beans for this season. Extremely well suited for market growers and products that require only the highest quality. Dark green pods, 7-8″ long, excellent flavor. Unique coffee colored seeds. Good disease resistance. 50-55 days.

Growing Calima Bean Seed

Sow the seeds of bush beans 1 inch deep and 2 inches apart in rows 18 to 24 inches apart. Once the plants are growing well, thin them to 6 inches. For the longest harvest, succession plant bush beans every two to three weeks, or until about two months before the first expected fall frost. When growing green beans pick a site with at least eight hours of daily sun and moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Raised beds are ideal, but green beans can also be grown in pots and planters. For bush beans, choose a large window box or a pot that’s at least 15 inches in diameter. For pole beans, the container should be at least 18 inches in diameter. Fill pots with a mixture of high quality potting mix and compost.

Preserving And Storing Calima Bean Plant

  • Wash and trim the green beans.
  • Cut your green beans into bite-sized pieces if you want (this step is completely optional!).
  • Blanch the beans for 3 minutes, and then plunge them into ice water.
  • Drain your green beans, pat them dry, and spread them out in a single layer on a baking sheet. Freeze until solid.
  • Transfer frozen beans to your containers of choice (more on that next!), and freeze until use.
