Early Scarlet Globe Radish History

(Raphanus sativus) Well known home and market variety. Globe shaped, bright scarlet color, excellent for bunching. Very early, make successive plantings for a constant supply. Sow in the spring or fall, harvest when small. 25-30 days from transplant. The Early Scarlet Globe Radish is a 19th-century variety noted for its bright scarlet skin, crisp white flesh, and mild flavor. Direct sow seeds in spring and fall in well-prepared garden loam. Radishes grow quickly; sow seeds every 2-3 weeks for a continuous harvest. Approximately 60-70 seeds per packet.

Growing Early Scarlet Globe Radish

As soon as the garden’s soil is workable in the spring, put on some warm clothes and plant a first sowing of radishes. Choose a site that gets at least six hours of sun a day. Prepare a light, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.8 to 6.8 for best production. Till the soil to a depth of at least eight inches. Make small weekly sowings, trying different varieties to obtain a wide mix of radishes. Because most spring varieties mature in less than a month, succession plantings ensure a steady supply of radishes. When making succession sowings, keep in mind that the longer varieties of radishes tend to tolerate heat better than the short, round ones

Radish Recipes

This method works so well for a few reasons: First, salting draws water out of the vegetables, so they’re more flavorful. Then squeezing expels more water and relaxes them into a crunchy-but-silky state. A final seasoning then has even more impact: The veg have been primed to absorb the rice vinegar and salt.
