Adding fennel to tea or to a recipe that could cause digestive upset can prevent the digestive upset. Tea brewed from the fennel plant alleviates chronic coughs. It can also act as a cough syrup and an expectorant to help clear mucus from the lungs. Oil of fennel can be used as an external pain reliever for sore muscles. Grown as an annual in the north, but a Perennial in zones 5-11.
