Italian Roma Tomato History

Plant breeders have improved the wild tomato. The name Roma suggests an Italian origin; however, the first Roma tomato was developed by the USDA in 1955.  There are now other Roma tomatoes, but the original USDA cultivar, ‘Roma VF’, is still commonly sold and grown

How To Grow Tomatoes

When growing Roma tomatoes, you can start them from seeds, or buy seedlings from your local nursery. Roma tomato plants require a long growing season. For best results, sow the seeds about ½ deep in a moist, well-drained starting mix, and at about 65℉ – 90℉. Place the seedlings next to a south-facing window or use artificial lights. Without adequate light, the seedling stems will elongate and lean over.

Preserving And Storing Tomatoes

Canning tomatoes are the classic way of turning fresh, ripe tomatoes into something you can enjoy all year long. Whole peeled tomatoes are perfect for turning into sauces, using on pizzas, and adding into stews. All you need is tomatoes, a large pot, sealable jars, and some time. No special skills required, we promise.

Tomato Recipe

Roasted Tomatoes. Of all the tomato recipes out there, this one might be my favorite. After a few hours in the oven, cherry tomatoes take on a delicious chewy texture and rich umami flavor. Pile them onto homemade pizza, toss them with pasta, or eat them all straight off the sheet pan.

Italian Roma Tomato Nutrition

Fresh tomatoes are low in carbs. The carb content consists mainly of simple sugars and insoluble fibers. Tomatoes are a good source of several vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, potassium, vitamin K, and folate. Lycopene is one of the most abundant plant compounds in tomatoes. Studies show that tomatoes and tomato products may reduce your risk of heart disease and several cancers. This fruit is also beneficial for skin health, as it may protect against sunburns. This may lead to less flavor development, resulting in bland tomatoes.
