King Of The North Bell Pepper History

The King Of The North Bell Pepper is the best variety for northern gardens where the seasons are cool and short. Full-figured, uniform fruits are excellent for stuffing or fresh eating and have a great, sweet flavor. A 1947 catalog described this sweet pepper succinctly: “Early, large, long pepper of heavy yielding habit, medium sized plant. The average size fruit is 6″ x 4” with blocky, thick walls producing very well on a medium size, multi branching plant. Sweet and uniform bull nose peppers ripen from dark green to deep red.

Growing King Of The North Peppers

Start transplants 6-8 weeks before planting date. Sow seeds into flat ~4 seeds/inch and then pot up into 2” or larger cells after first set of true leaves appear. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 85°F.  For growing transplants, maintain temperature at around 75°F during the day and 65°F at night. Harden off plants by slightly reducing temperature to 60-65°F and reducing water for 2-3 days before transplanting.

Preserving And Storing Peppers

To keep your King Of The North Bell Peppers tasting great longer, store them in your refrigerator crisper drawer. In the fridge, raw Bell Peppers will last between 1 and 2 weeks. Cooked Bell Peppers will typically last 3-5 days. Partially-eaten peppers will last longer by storing them in a sealed container with the seeds and stems still attached. For cut Bell Peppers, store them in a sealed container or plastic bag with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture. Keep them in your crisper drawer—just don’t forget about them!
