Mexican Midget Tomato History

No hybrid comes close to this variety for huge tomato flavor in small package. An incredible flash of tomato flavor. One of the best fresh-eating tomatoes we’ve ever had. The Mexico Midget surely has wild genes in its heritage. This variety was winner of Seed Savers Exchange’s 2014 Tomato Tasting at Heritage Farm. The Spanish brought the small yellow tomato to Europe and the Philippines. The climate in Italy allowed for many new varieties of tomato to develop with intense flavor. Alexander W Livingston took North American tomato varieties and upgraded them to a commercial crop.

How To Grow a Mexican Midget Tomato

plant them 1/4 inch deep and 1 inch apart in flats placed in a warm, sunny room. Once the seedlings grow their second set of leaves (the first true leaves), transplant them to plastic cups, burying the stems deeper than before. This encourages a strong root system. If you’re buying transplants from a nursery, you’ll also want to let them develop a solid root system before planting. Plant your tomato plants deeper than they come in the pot, all the way up to the top few leaves. When planted this way, tomatoes are able to develop roots all along their stems. And more roots make for a stronger plant. You can either dig a deep hole or simply dig a shallow trench and lay the plant sideways.

Preserving And Storing a Mexican Midget Cherry Tomato

Among the many types of canned tomatoes we find on the grocery store shelves is tomato puree, which is often an ingredient in recipes for pasta sauce and tomato-based soups. Tomato purée is silky smooth and free of any seeds or skin that tend to make their way into chopped tomatoes or tomato sauce.
