Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion. Large, globe-shaped yellow-skinned onion with a crisp, firm white flesh that keeps well. A long day onion, it develops late in the season in the North. In the South it makes scallions, or fresh green onions, when planted as a fall onion. Needs 13 hours or more of day length for best bulb development. Make sure the thick, heavy neck dries well, and it will store for several months in a cool, dry place. Tolerant to pink root.
How To Plant Yellow Sweet Spanish Onions
Plant seed 1/2″ deep, 1/2″ apart, in rows 12 to 18″ apart. Thin to 4″ spacing for large bulbs, 2″ spacing for smaller bulbs but higher yields, or 1″ spacing for scallions. Start transplants inside about 8 to 10 weeks before last frost date. Transplant 2 to 4 weeks before last frost date. Space 4″ apart for large bulbs, 2″ apart for smaller bulbs, or 1″ apart for scallions. From sets: Plant sets about 1″ deep 2 to 4 weeks before last frost date. Space 4″ apart for large bulbs or 2″ apart for smaller bulbs. Onions have shallow root systems and need consistent moisture and good weed control.
Preserving And Storing Onions For later Use
Store yellow sweet Spanish onions in a cool, dry place. To store your onions for later use, remove any loose dirt and cut off the dry tops to within 1 to 3 inches from the top of the bulb. Then, trim the roots off of the onion bulb. Be sure to leave the outer protective dry skin in place around the bulb. You can generally store onions up to eight months. they should be stored in a cool, dry area with temperatures between 35 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit and a relative humidity of 50 to 60 percent.
